We run macs and pcs and several other printers, this was our cheapo, but it has turned out to be more trouble than it was worth. The print quality fulfilled my expectations. Now I'm looking for a new cheapo service printer that won't take up so much of my time. I believe it died today, a problem with the ink well, RIP. Unfortunately I've had to reinstall and reconfigure this printer at least ten times in our twenty months of ownership. We wanted it's wifi capability.
Only complaints are that the inks dry up if you don't use it frequently and the ink cartridge holders are very fragile. My fault for being a little heavy handed but wish it was a bit sturdier and I feel it's a bit to fragile for an "office use", especially if a bunch of people are using it or poking around in it. I bought this printer when it first came out. Recently one of the cartrige holders snapped and that was it, the whole printer would not work. Overall I believe I got my moneys worth, it lasted a few years and that is all that I really expected it to do. I have a MacG5 and it was super simple to set up. As soon as I turned it on, my mac found the printer over the network, I followed the instructions and let 'er rip.
I did use the installation disk.I did have a problem on only one laptop with the install disk, for some reason the laptop would not read the CD.I transferred the CD to a usb flash drive and run the installfrom it. I had this Deskjet 6980 wireless printer up and running wireless in short order. Works great with both my Toshiba laptops with Windows Vista with sp1 installed.
Last week, in the middle of Christmas-card making, it stopped printing yellow. Seems like an early demise for a machine that has been so lightly used. I like it for printing on card stock--the colors are true, without using the expensive 99 photo cartridge (which does, when used, make nice photo prints on glossy paper).
(Both the old and new cartridges, by the way, worked fine on this printer's twin at my office). All that said, I will probably stick with HP (6988) because I have invested in cartridges. After an hour of on-line chat with "Phillips" at HP, who didn't know much, he determined what I already suspected, which is that this is an out-of-warranty hardware problem, which means that the printer is dead.
I bought this printer 20 months ago and have used it only on weekends. Nothing recommended--swabbing the cartridges, plugging and unplugging--can get the light to stop flashing or the printer to start printing. They really get you coming and going--printers that are worth even less than what you pay for them plus ink that costs an arm and a leg.
I have never liked the way it shakes when printing. I changed the cartridge; the left cartridge light flashed and is still flashing.
2 sided printing capabilities, WIFI , Ethernet , USB and an easy driver setup will help you print a lot of pages. My only problem is that the ethernet drivers are not supported in XP x64 (but they support Vista x64). This HP device is another good one.
